What Is Spermidine?

Spermidine trihydrochloride (CAS 334-50-9) is the stable, water-soluble hydrochloride salt of spermidine, a naturally occurring aliphatic polyamine (chemical formula C7H19N3·3HCl, molecular weight 254.62 g/mol) present in virtually every living cell, from bacteria to humans. It is produced endogenously in mammalian tissue and also occurs at relatively high concentrations in foods such as wheat germ, soybeans, aged cheese, natto, and certain mushrooms, though both dietary and endogenous levels are reported to decline with age. Commercial bulk spermidine trihydrochloride is typically obtained by extraction and purification from plant sources such as wheat germ, by chemical synthesis from putrescine, or, increasingly, by microbial fermentation using metabolically engineered production strains combined with enzymatic conversion steps, followed by chromatographic purification and crystallization as the trihydrochloride salt to reach food- or pharmaceutical-grade purity.
