A quote sheet lands with "NMN 99%" and a price. Another lands with the same two words and a price a third of it. Buyers sourcing bulk actives for the first time often treat this as a simple honesty question — who's lying — but the more useful question is what specific, checkable differences produce a gap that large. Usually it's one of a handful of concrete factors, not a mystery.
The Same Name Doesn't Mean the Same Product
“NMN 99%” or “NAD+ 98%” on a quote sheet looks like a commodity spec — a name, a purity number, done. In practice, that single line hides several variables that materially affect cost: how the material was actually made, whether the purity number has been independently verified or is simply a printed claim, what testing and documentation come with the shipment, and how consistent the material is from batch to batch. Two suppliers can quote what looks like an identical spec and be selling genuinely different products.
Cost Driver: Synthesis Route
How an ingredient is manufactured is one of the biggest cost variables, and it varies by product rather than following a single industry-wide rule. Some actives are produced through fermentation, where an engineered microbial strain is cultured to accumulate the target compound intracellularly before extraction and purification. Others go through enzymatic/biocatalytic conversion, where an immobilized enzyme converts a precursor substrate into the target molecule under controlled conditions — a route that tends to generate fewer chlorinated byproducts and ionic residues than chemical synthesis, but requires a working enzyme system and careful process control. Still others are made through multi-step chemical synthesis — protecting groups, a coupling reaction, deprotection, salt formation, recrystallization — a route that can be reliable and well-established but typically carries more processing steps, reagent costs, and byproduct-removal burden. Where a compound is listed in a recognized pharmacopeia (for example, USP or EP), meeting that monograph's specification is a meaningfully higher bar than an internal “99%” claim with no external reference point — but that pharmacopeial listing only applies to specific compounds, not to every ingredient marketed as “pharma grade.” Verifying actual assay data, the analytical method used, and whether the material is pharmacopeia-listed for that specific compound is worth more than comparing two purity percentages that look identical on paper.
Cost Driver: Testing and Documentation
Real quality testing costs money: heavy metal screening, microbial limits, identity confirmation, and third-party laboratory verification all take time and lab fees, and someone pays for them. A batch that ships with a genuine certificate of analysis, backed by an independent lab check rather than only an internal test, costs more to produce than one that ships with no testing at all, or with a COA that's essentially a template filled in with expected numbers rather than that batch's actual results. When a quote is unusually low, it's worth asking directly whether a batch-specific COA is included by default, what's tested, and whether third-party verification happens — and treating vague or evasive answers as information in themselves.
Cost Driver: Batch-to-Batch Consistency
A single low-priced batch that happens to test fine doesn't tell you much about the tenth batch. Consistency requires process discipline at every stage — checking incoming raw materials, monitoring the reaction or fermentation itself, and testing the finished product before release — plus batch-level traceability that links a finished lot back to the raw material and process records behind it. That discipline has a cost, and it's one of the easiest things for a low-price supplier to under-invest in, because inconsistency often only shows up several orders in, after a buyer has already committed to a formulation built around the first batch's numbers.
The Red Flag That's Easy to Miss: Fabricated Certifications
