What Is Ubiquinol?

Ubiquinol (reduced Coenzyme Q10) is the fully reduced, hydroquinone form of Coenzyme Q10, a lipid-soluble benzoquinone derivative present in the mitochondrial electron transport chain of virtually all human and animal cells. It belongs to the ubiquinone/prenylquinone chemical class, with molecular formula C59H92O4 and molecular weight of approximately 881.38 g/mol, carrying the long decaprenyl isoprenoid side chain characteristic of the CoQ10 homolog series. In vivo, ubiquinol continuously interconverts with its oxidized counterpart, ubiquinone, through cellular redox cycling. Commercial bulk ubiquinol is generally not extracted from natural sources at scale; it is manufactured by fermenting an engineered microbial strain to biosynthesize the CoQ10 quinone backbone, then applying a controlled enzymatic/biocatalytic reduction step to convert the oxidized quinone into the reduced hydroquinone, followed by purification and stabilization under an inert atmosphere.
